Mercedes-Benz has introduced a new lower-grade version of its flagship EQS electric car, which thus far has been pioneered by the top-spec-only performance-oriented EQS53 in Australia.
The new EQS450 4Matic is hardly a budget offering, however, with a starting price of $219,900 before on-road costs, although it does offer keen buyers a whopping $107,175 saving when compared to the existing EQS53, which wears an MSRP of $327,075.
The EQS450 is no slouch either, with its dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 265kW/800Nm, with a 0-100km/h sprint of 5.6 seconds.
This is backed by an enormous 107.8kWh battery to offer up to 664km of driving range (on the more lenient NEDC testing cycle). This is backed by a 22kW AC charger (for charging times of under five hours) or a 200kW DC charger, for 10 - 80 per cent charging times in under 40 minutes.
Standard features include an AMG exterior package in Australia, 12-inch alloy wheels, Nappa leather interior highlights, high-grade upholstery for the rear seats, a 710-watt, 15-speaker audio system, the brand’s signature 12.8-inch MBUX multimedia system and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, as well as the expected phone mirroring connectivity. The car also features Mercedes’ augmented reality navigation suite.
The EQS450 also scores a high level of safety equipment as standard, including auto emergency braking front and rear, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic systems, as well as an advanced adaptive cruise suite, traffic sign recognition, and a 360-degree parking suite.
The EQS450 has also just been approved for a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating, with the highest score in current testing criteria for child occupant protection. Interestingly the EQS53 AMG is excluded from this rating, despite possessing largely the same equipment.
First deliveries of new EQS stock of both variants are expected in September of this year.
With the announcement that the Tesla Model S will only be built in left-hand drive, it looks to be the case that the EQS will count its direct rivals as only the Porsche Taycan ($165,700 - $365,100) and Audi e-tron GT ($178,875 - $246,875) for the foreseeable future, or at least until the Polestar 5 arrives, likely in 2025.
